My first adult encounter with sparkly shoes was in 2010 when I thought it would be cool to wear a pair of purple, glitter-ridden oxfords from Steve Madden to New York Fashion Week. Definitely not my best look, but 19-year-old me was onto something.
Glittery shoes, as I have found, are one of the most versatile items you can have in your closet. Going to an event? Done, glitter shoes. Want to look like a boss at work, but need a playful touch? Boom, glitter shoes. Want to go to NYFW looking like you just stepped out of an A.C.Moore workshop? Glitter. Shoes.
I asked friends if they would casually wear glitter shoes and was genuinely surprised by their resounding ‘Yes’. One friend said, “At this point in my life, I don’t care what people think.” And isn’t that what makes fashion so exciting? Of course I could act my age and wear sensible shoes with a longer wear time than four hours, but where’s the fun in that?
If you’re interested in regressing to your childhood by way of glitter shoes, keep your overall look simple and let those shoes SHINE. If you’re going for a casual look, reserve the sparkle solely on your shoes. (Ugh, so many amazing shoe puns.) If you’re feeling like the a Man Repeller, try glitter heels with socks and a good ole’ denim skirt. Bringing the 90s back, one step at a time.
